Halloween is a big deal in my house! We throw a costume party every year and go all out with spooky decorations and snacks. Among all the fun Halloween food I’ve made over the years, believe it or not, a pumpkin barfing guacamole has become the staple centerpiece.

It’s right up there with other scary snacks like my Kitty Litter Cake and  Monster Sloppy Joes. This gross-looking yet great-tasting always gets the biggest reaction from our guests, so I decided it deserved its own spotlight.

A puking pumpkin is exactly what it sounds like –a carved pumpkin that looks like it’s hurling delicious guacamole served with dippable snacks. Let’s dive into how to make this hilariously horrifying guacamole-puking pumpkin and get ready to gross out your guests!

Why you’ll love it

Here’s why this puking pumpkin is a hit at every Halloween party:

  • Easy to make. With straightforward ingredients, tools, and simple steps, this recipe is perfect for busy hosts who want maximum impact with minimal effort.
  • Deliciously disturbing. The creamy, flavorful guacamole pairs perfectly with various dippables, ensuring this snack is as tasty as it is gruesome.
  • Versatile and Fun: You can get creative with your pumpkin’s face and the surrounding dippables, making it a fun project for kids and adults.
  • Great conversation starter. It will certainly spark conversation and a good laugh, making your Halloween party memorable, whether a kid-friendly party or an adults-only bash.

Ingredients

  • Pie pumpkin. Also known as sugar pumpkins. They are smaller and sweeter than the large pumpkins used for jack-o’-lanterns. They are ideal for this project because they have a sturdy base that sits flat and is easy to carve. If you notice any signs of spoilage, pick a different pumpkin.
  • Guacamole. It makes it look like the pumpkin is heaving a chunky green concoction out of its carved mouth, but really, it’s everyone’s favorite creamy, flavorful dip. My 5 Ingredient Guacamole Dip recipe is the best, but you can use store-bought guacamole to save time.
  • Dippables. Choose a few dippable snacks to scoop up the guacamole. Tortilla chips or crackers are a classic crunchy choice. Fresh veggies also pair well with the creamy guacamole.

How to make a puking pumpkin

Follow this step-by-step how-to carve a puking pumpkin guide –and create a creepy centerpiece all your party guests will love:

Step 1: Wash the pumpkin. Rinse the pumpkin under cool running water to remove loose dirt and debris from the surface, using a soft brush or cloth to scrub the surface. Use a clean towel to dry the pumpkin completely,

Step 2: Carve the pumpkin. Cut off the top and scoop out all the seeds and pulp. Draw eyes, nose, and a wide, open mouth for the guac to “pour” out of, then carefully carve the facial features.

Step 3: Make the guacamole.  Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Mash with a fork until smooth but slightly chunky. Add finely chopped onion, tomato, jalapeño, cilantro, and garlic. Stir in fresh lime juice, a splash of pickled jalapeno juice, and salt. Head to my Guacamole Dip for the full recipe and ingredient amounts.

Step 4: Assemble and serve. Place your carved pumpkin on a large serving platter or tray. Spoon the guacamole into the mouth, letting it spill out to create the “puking” effect. Arrange tortilla chips and other dippable snacks around the pumpkin and serve.

Recipe tips and FAQs

  • Recommended tools. A basic carving kit with a saw, scoop, and carving tools will help you easily carve your pumpkin’s face. If you don’t have a carving kit, use a sharp knife to cut off the top and carve and a spoon to remove the seeds and pulp from the inside.
  • Sanitize your pumpkin. Since we’re using the pumpkin for decorative purposes with food, you may want to sanitize your pumpkin with a solution of one part white vinegar and three parts water.  Wipe down the pumpkin with this solution, then rinse and dry thoroughly before carving.
  • Customize the face. Get creative with your pumpkin’s facial expression. The face adds personality to the food table, whether it’s a scary, silly, smiley, or a shocked look.

Variations

If you want to offer a different dip with your puking pumpkin, here are some fun and delicious alternatives:

What are the best dippables to serve with my puking pumpkin?

Choose dippables that complement the creamy goodness of the guacamole. Tortilla chips are a classic choice, but you can also serve vegetable sticks (carrots, celery, bell peppers), crackers, pretzels, or even breadsticks on the side.

Can I eat the pumpkin after it’s been used?

You can, but consider how long it’s been sitting out. If it hasn’t started to wilt or dry out and you choose to eat it, I recommend using it in recipes like soups or pumpkin puree.

Storing

Store any leftover guacamole in an airtight container with a piece of plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface before sealing the container. Keep refrigerated and consume within 2 days.
