I love having flavorful condiments handy to jazz up the healthy protein sources I meal prep for the week. However, store-bought sauces and spreads typically contain sugar and unhealthy fats. Insert this EASY and healthy avocado yogurt dip.

This crazy good creamy avocado yogurt dip is essentially guacamole with protein-packed Greek yogurt, and I put this s**t on everything!

No, seriously. This avocado dip is great on meatloaf, hard-boiled eggs, burgers, pork, chicken, fish, and any dish you’d usually enjoy with sour cream, like tacos or, my favorite, this Mexican Chicken Casserole

It’s also an excellent dip, of course. I love scooping it up with a spread of crunchy veggies like cucumbers, mini bell peppers, and blanched green beans, but you could also use your favorite crusty bread, chips, crackers, and so on.

If avocados are your thing, I also have a killer guacamole recipe you’ll love, but first, creamy avocado dip.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s SUPER simple to make with only 5 ingredients and about a minute of your time.
  • It’s versatile. You can serve this dip as an appetizer, spread, or sauce.
  • It’s healthy! Avocados are packed with healthy fats, and Greek yogurt is packed with protein.
  • This dip is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day, and there’s no need for green food coloring!

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients for avocado yogurt dip measured out on a counter
  • Avocado – Use a guacamole-ready avocado with nearly black skins and flesh that’s soft and easy to mash.
  • Plain Greek yogurt – Use full-fat Greek yogurt for the best flavor and texture (plus a protein boost).
  • Lime juice – Freshly squeezed lime juice helps preserve the freshness of the avocado while adding a palatable zing! You can use lemon juice here if you need to.
  • Cilantro – Because avocado and fresh cilantro belong together, of course.
  • Garlic salt – For seasoning.

How to make avocado dip with Greek yogurt

Step 1: Mash avocado. First, mash the avocado with a fork just as you would for guacamole.

Step 2: Combine ingredients. Add the Greek yogurt, lime juice, cilantro, and garlic salt to a bowl and stir well to combine.

Recipe Tips

  • The avocado should still be somewhat firm when you squeeze it, and the skin should be almost black. If the skin is green, let the avocados sit at room temperature for a day before using them.
  • You can make your avocado dip smooth or chunky. For a chunkier version, leave some of the avocados intact during mashing.
  • If you’re not a fan of cilantro, flat-leaf parsley is the best substitute, or you can leave it out altogether.
  • If you aren’t in a hurry, cover the dip with a flush piece of plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving. This gives the individual flavors more time to wake up and mingle.

Variations

As for add-ins, if the ingredient goes great in guac, it will most likely go great in this avocado yogurt dip. Here are some tasty ideas:

  • Garlic – I used garlic salt, but you could also use fresh minced (or pressed) garlic. Garlic powder also works.
  • Onion – Add minced red, green, or sweet white onion to the dip.
  • Spicy mix-ins – If you want to turn up the heat, go with minced jalapeno peppers, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or your favorite hot sauce.
  • Meaty mix-ins – You won’t regret it if you boost the protein with chopped bacon, shredded chicken, lump crab meat, or diced shrimp!

Storing

Keep creamy avocado dip in an airtight container covered in the fridge for 3-4 days. You may notice some discoloration, but the Greek yogurt will keep the dip from browning as quickly as guacamole. I wouldn’t recommend freezing this dip.

Recipe FAQs

What goes well with avocado dip?

Using pita chips, tortilla chips, or fresh-cut vegetables as a serving vessel is always a good idea for snacking. As a condiment, here are some of the many dishes this avocado dip with Greek yogurt is excellent with:
Greek Meatballs
Yogurt-Marinated Chicken Skewers
Mexican Picadillo
Beef Mexican Casserole
Chicken Nachos
Chicken Fajitas
Mediterranean Steak Quesadilla
Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos
Garlic Lime Grilled Flat Iron Steak

Is this dip okay to eat after it starts turning brown?

It isn’t nearly as visually appetizing, but as long as you’ve stored the avocado yogurt dip in the fridge and it isn’t more than 3-4 days old, it’s completely safe to eat (this also applies to traditional guacamole). I press a piece of plastic wrap tightly against the top and just scrape off any brown areas, stir, and eat.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yup. Swap regular Greek yogurt with your favorite vegan Greek yogurt, and you’re good to go.
