What’s so special about a Ninja Creami?
To make this delicious chocolate protein ice cream, you’ll need the Ninja Creami. Let me introduce you to this handy kitchen gadget if you’re unfamiliar with it!
The Ninja Creami is not your average ice cream maker. It’s an innovative appliance designed for homemade ice cream, sorbet, gelato, and other frozen goodies. Unlike traditional ice cream makers, there’s no need to pre-freeze a mixing bowl or deal with salt and ice. Ninja’s unique Creamify™ technology finely shaves and churns your ice cream base into a smooth, creamy texture. It’s a game-changer that will make your homemade ice cream experience pleasant!
Ingredients you’ll need

- Fairlife 2% milk. This ultra-filtered milk is a staple in our fridge, as it packs in 50% more protein and 50% less sugar than regular milk. But you can use any milk here, like almond, cashew, oat, or even regular dairy milk.
- Vanilla protein powder. I used Puori Bourbon Vanilla Whey (use code Amee20 for a discount). It adds a lovely, natural vanilla flavor without artificial aftertaste, but you can use your favorite vanilla protein powder here.
- Malted milk powder. The secret to that nostalgic malted milkshake flavor! A couple of tablespoons go a long way in adding depth and richness.
- Ovaltine. Ovaltine isn’t just for your grandma’s kitchen! This classic malted drink mix adds an extra layer of chocolatey goodness. If you don’t have Ovaltine, substitute Nesquik powder or cocoa powder mixed with a sweetener.
- Sugar-free vanilla pudding mix. A little pudding mix helps achieve that thick, creamy texture while enhancing the vanilla flavor.
How to make protein ice cream with Ninja Creami

Step 1: Prepare the ice cream base. Add the milk, protein powder, pudding mix, malted milk powder, and Ovaltine to a Ninja Creami pint-size ice cream container. Use a small frother or immersion blender to blend until smooth.
Step 2: Freeze the mixture. Place the container on a flat surface in the freezer for 24 hours or until solid.
Step 3: Process the ice cream. Remove the container from the freezer and install it in the Ninja Creami according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Select the “Ice Cream” function and let the machine do its magic.
Step 4: Adjust consistency and serve. If the ice cream is too hard, add a splash of milk and select the “Re-spin” function. For a thicker, scoopable texture, use the “mix in” setting for 1-2 cycles instead of the re-spin. Scoop it out and enjoy your homemade chocolate malt-flavored protein ice cream!

My recipe tips and variations
- Blend with care. You must blend the ice cream base ingredients until completely smooth, so it freezes evenly. If you don’t have a frother, you can combine the ingredients in a shaker bottle or food processor before freezing.
- Patience is key! Make sure you freeze the ice cream mixture for at least 24 hours to ensure it fully solidifies. If it’s still too soft, freeze it for a bit longer.
- Respin for perfection. If your Creami ice cream is too firm after the first cycle, don’t hesitate to add more milk and select the “Re-spin” function to achieve an even creamier consistency. You can also use one to two cycles of the “mix in” setting to achieve a thicker, scoopable texture.
Experiment with mix-ins
While this Ninja Creami protein ice cream is fantastic as is, feel free to get creative with mix-ins. Add whatever you like after the initial ice cream cycle, then use the “Mix-In” function to incorporate. Mix and match the following mix-ins for a customized treat:
- Chocolate Chips
- Crushed Malt Balls
- Peanut Butter – Or PB2 powdered peanut butter for extra protein!
- Crushed Cookies – Like Oreos or Chocolate Wafers.
- Brownie Chunks
- Nuts – Like chopped almonds, walnuts, pecans, or pistachios.
- Caramel or Chocolate sauce – Swirl it in for a ribbon of gooey goodness.
- Chopped Dried Fruit – Like cherries, cranberries, or raisins.
Storing instructions
This protein ice cream is best enjoyed fresh from the Ninja Creami, but you can also store any leftovers in the freezer. Make sure to smooth out the top so that the surface is level, so it won’t damage the blade. Before serving, just give it another spin to soften.
Certainly! Chocolate protein powder works great here, too. Just make sure it’s a protein powder that you like the taste of before using it in the recipe.
It’s SO easy! Just remove the pint containers and wash them with warm, soapy water, wipe down the machine with a damp cloth, and make sure to dry everything thoroughly before storing.
You can substitute dairy milk with your favorite non-dairy milk alternative and use a vegan protein powder and pudding mix to make a dairy-free and vegan version of this ice cream. However, I haven’t tested out alternatives for this recipe.

Chocolate Malt Ninja Creami Protein Ice Cream
Equipment
- Ninja Creami ice cream maker
Ingredients
- 1 cup Fairlife 2% milk
- 30 grams vanilla protein powder *I used Puori bourbon vanilla whey
- 1 tbsp sugar-free vanilla pudding mix
- 2 tbsp malted milk powder
- 2 tbsp Ovaltine rich chocolate flavor
- pinch of salt
- *optional- chopped chocolate malt balls for garnish
Instructions
- Add all of the ingredients to the pint-size ice cream container and use a small frother whisk to blend. You can also use an immersion blender for this. Make sure everything is well mixed.
- Cover with the lid and freeze for 24 hours until set.
- Remove the pint from the freezer and remove the lid. Refer to the Creami guide for bowl assembly.
- Select "Ice Cream" and process until complete. Add a splash of milk and re-spin until you reach your desired consistency. You may need to re-spin it again, scraping down the sides in between, for the best soft-serve ice cream texture. *For a thicker, more scoopable ice cream texture, instead of selecting the "respin" setting, use the "mix-in" setting for 1-2 cycles.
- Top with crushed malted milk balls, if desired.
