Matcha Strawberry Smoothie
With this Matcha Strawberry Smoothie recipe, enjoy two smoothies in one –a sweet and creamy strawberry smoothie layered underneath a rich matcha smoothie, creating a pink-to-green ombre effect! Perfect for a wickedly refreshing, energizing protein-packed treat!
Whether you’re a fan of classic strawberry-vanilla smoothies, banana matcha blends or just looking for a stunning pink-and-green elixir, this Matcha Strawberry Smoothie delivers all of the above!
This recipe features two beautiful layers: the first is a creamy strawberry base made from frozen strawberries, almond milk, and a hint of vanilla. The second is a blend of ceremonial-grade matcha, almond milk, Greek yogurt, frozen banana, and honey, creating a pleasantly mild earthy flavor. Layered on top of each other, they create a pretty pink-to-green gradient effect.
It’s an excellent post-workout snack or meal replacement, especially if you add protein powder to the matcha layer. Plus, the matcha offers a gentle caffeine lift. You can divide it into two smaller servings, each containing 25 grams of protein, or enjoy one giant matcha strawberry smoothie –my personal favorite!
Recipe features
- Protein-packed. It offers up to 50g of protein per serving, thanks to whey protein and Greek yogurt to keep you feeling satisfied longer.
- Gentle pick-me-up. A serving of matcha contains less caffeine than a cup of coffee but enough to get you in gear without the jitters.
- Low in added sugar. Sweetened naturally with stevia and honey, this smoothie keeps sugar levels in check while tasting like a heavenly sweet treat.
- Pink looks good with green. This two-tone smoothie proves that pink and green are not only gorgeous together but delicious, too!!
Ingredients you’ll need
- Strawberries. These are the sweet base of the strawberry layer, responsible for the pink color. Make sure your strawberries are completely frozen for a thick, creamy texture.
- Almond milk. I love the subtle nuttiness and creaminess almond milk adds to the strawberry and matcha layers. Plus, it’s low in calories and dairy-free. If you’d like a more decadent smoothie, try cashew, coconut, oat, or dairy milk, depending on your dietary preference.
- Vanilla. Use pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste to enhance the sweetness of the strawberry layer.
- Stevia. This is my favorite sugar-free, no-calorie sweetener. If you prefer a little more sweetness, honey, monk fruit sweetener, maple syrup, or agave nectar are good options.
- Greek yogurt. It adds richness and creaminess while boosting the protein in the matcha layer. I use Oikos Pro Greek yogurt, but any vanilla Greek yogurt will work.
- Banana. It sweetens the matcha layer and enhances its creaminess. Make sure to freeze the banana ahead of time to get the perfect texture. I like to slice it into coins for easy blending.
- Honey. I used honey to sweeten the matcha layer. Substitute maple syrup or agave if preferred.
- Matcha. The key to the green, earthy top layer. I highly recommend using high-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha, as lower-grade matcha powder tastes more bitter.
- Vanilla whey protein powder. Though optional, adding whey protein to the matcha makes this smoothie perfect for a filling post-workout snack or meal replacement.
- Ice. The key to a thick, cold, and refreshing matcha layer. Adjust the amount depending on your desired consistency.
How to make a matcha strawberry smoothie
Step 1: Prepare the strawberry layer. Add the frozen strawberries, 3/4 cup of almond milk, vanilla extract, and stevia to your blender container and blend until smooth and creamy. Pour this pink mixture into the bottom of two glasses (or one large glass if you aren’t sharing).
Step 2: Prepare the matcha layer. Rinse the blender, then add 1/2 cup of almond milk, Greek yogurt, frozen banana, honey, matcha powder, and a handful of ice. Blend until everything is thoroughly combined and smooth.
Step 3: Assemble the smoothie. Carefully pour the green mixture over the pink layer in your glasses. For an Instagram-worthy finish, garnish with fresh strawberries and dust with matcha powder. Enjoy!
Recipe tips and FAQs
- Use frozen fruit. Frozen strawberries and bananas are the key to that perfect thick, creamy consistency in both layers. If you use fresh fruit, add extra ice to compensate.
- Adjust sweetness. The amount of stevia or honey you need depends on the ripeness of your fruit and personal taste. Start with a small amount and taste as you go. Remember, you can always add a little more, but reducing sweetness is more challenging once it’s too sweet.
- Chill your glasses ahead of time. A cold glass keeps your smoothie cooler longer, making it extra refreshing on a warm day.
Variations
- Add other pink and green fruit. Feel free to incorporate other pink frozen fruits in the strawberry layer, like raspberries, cherries, or watermelon. Frozen green fruits like kiwi, apple, or honeydew would be great in the matcha layer.
- Add a healthy fat: Consider adding flaxseed, chia, or nut butter to the strawberry layer. Add avocado to the matcha layer to make it more rich and filling and deepen the green color,
- Add leafy greens: The matcha layer is an excellent opportunity to sneak in greens like spinach or kale. They won’t overpower the matcha layer but will make it an even more nutrient-packed powerhouse.
Ceremonial-grade matcha is the highest-quality matcha. It is made from younger leaves, producing a smoother, less bitter taste. Regular or culinary-grade matcha tends to have a stronger, more bitter flavor and is better suited for cooking, like in my Wild Blueberry Matcha Protein Pancakes.
Yes! To make a vegan strawberry banana matcha smoothie, replace the Greek yogurt with a plant-based yogurt (like coconut or almond milk yogurt), and use maple syrup or agave instead of honey. You can also swap whey protein with pea protein powder or your preferred plant-based protein blend.
Storing
This strawberry matcha smoothie is best enjoyed fresh. If you have any leftover, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
