If you loved my Berry Bliss Protein Smoothie, I’m pleased to introduce its extra refreshing frozen cousin: the Mixed Berry Protein Shake. It’s just as delicious and packed with protein! So what makes this one so special? The simple yet powerful lineup of ingredients, of course.

It starts with a blend of frozen strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries for a naturally sweet, antioxidant-rich base. Then, we add vanilla whey protein to support muscle recovery, ground flaxseeds for fiber and omega-3s, and almond milk for a smooth, creamy texture. A touch of your preferred natural sweetener makes it taste like a treat without the dreaded sugar crash! 🙌

It’s the perfect high-protein shake for meal replacement when you’re rushing out the door in the morning or need to refuel after a tough workout. Blend it up, take it on the go, and you’ll feel energized and satisfied for hours!

Recipe features

  • Perfect for meal replacement. Packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, it’s great for a grab-and-go breakfast or post-workout recovery.
  • Only 5 ingredients (plus ice!). A simple, no-fuss recipe that’s easy to customize with fun add-ins like nut butter, veggies, or even ice cream.
  • Calls for frozen mixed berries. Picked and frozen at their peak ripeness, the berries lock in their natural sweetness and nutrients while creating a thick, frosty shake!

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Milk of choice. I make my protein shakes and smoothies with unsweetened almond milk, but oat, soy, coconut, cashew, or regular cow’s milk also works great!
  • Frozen berry mix. A triple-berry medley with strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries is ideal. If you’re using individual frozen berries, aim for roughly ⅓ cup of each.
  • Whey protein powder. I use vanilla-flavored whey protein powder, but chocolate or strawberry-flavored would also be delicious. Unflavored also works, but you may want to add a dash of vanilla or almond extract for more flavor.
  • Flaxseed. Ground golden flaxseed helps thicken the shake while boosting the fiber and healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Chia or hemp seeds will also do the trick.
  • Sweetener (optional). I use a packet of stevia, but honey, maple syrup, or 1-2 pitted dates are also great options.
  • Ice. Adding ice helps create a thicker, frothier shake. Adjust the amount depending on your desired consistency.

Recipe tips and FAQs

  • Use a high-power blender. To get that perfectly smooth texture, a high-speed blender (like a Vitamix or Ninja) has what it takes to break down the ice, frozen fruit, and seeds thoroughly, so you don’t end up with any gritty bits in your shake.
  • Add sweetener strategically. If your protein powder is already sweetened (which most are!), you can skip adding sweetener. Blend first, taste, and adjust accordingly. That way, you don’t accidentally go overboard.
  • Make it extra creamy. Using frozen berries and ice will result in a protein slushy of sorts. For a more cohesive, Frosty-like texture, try adding ¼ teaspoon of guar gum or xanthan gum to stabilize the liquids and create a thick, creamy texture without adding any extra calories or sugar. You can also freeze your milk of choice in ice cube trays and use instead of ice.

Customize it

  • Add nut butter – Add a spoonful of peanut, almond, or cashew butter for healthy fats, protein, and rich nutty flavor. Almond butter especially pairs well with the mixed berries.
  • Add frozen veggies – If you want to boost the nutrients without anyone knowing, frozen cauliflower, zucchini, or avocado is a great addition. They blend well and thicken the shake without affecting the flavor.
  • Add fresh leafy greens – Sneak in a handful of fresh spinach or kale for an added dose of greens! You won’t taste them, but you will get all the benefits.
  • Make it a milkshake  – Try blending a scoop of high-protein ice cream, such as my Strawberry Banana Protein Ice Cream, Tropical Protein Ice Cream, or Chocolate Protein Ice Cream, with the shake for a guilt-free treat.
What can I use instead of whey protein powder?

If whey protein isn’t your thing, you can blend in Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or even pasteurized liquid egg white for extra protein and creaminess. If you’re looking for vegan-friendly options, try plant-based protein powders like pea, hemp, brown rice, or soy.

How much protein is in this shake?

This will depend on your protein powder, but a typical serving with almond milk, whey protein, flaxseed, and frozen mixed berries contains around 28 grams of protein. If you swap ingredients, be sure to check nutrition labels to keep track of your protein intake!

Storing and freezing

Storing: Protein shakes with frozen fruit are best enjoyed immediately after blending, but you can store any extra shake in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. If separation occurs, just throw it back in the blender.

Freezing: Divide the shake in an ice cube tray, freeze it, and then store the frozen protein shake cubes in a resealable bag for up to 1 month. Reblend the cubes as needed whenever you need a protein-packed beverage.
