Vitamix Chocolate Ice Cream
A super easy recipe for Vitamix chocolate ice cream made in the Vitamix blender. Super fast to make and tastes just like soft serve!
I am having so much fun playing with my new Vitamix! This thing is a marvel machine…it makes soups, shakes, juices, smoothies, grinds up grains, chops, and ice cream all in one (easy to clean) container. Amazing. My kids have been anxious for me to whip up some ice cream for them, so I tried out the Vitamix chocolate ice cream recipe in the Vitamix cookbook. It’s delicious!
My kids equate it to a Wendy’s frosty. I like that I know exactly what’s in it (no preservatives or artificial junk) and it’s simple and tasty. Better than its store-bought counterparts. This recipe takes less than a few minutes to whip up.
Ingredients you’ll need
- Whole milk
- Rich chocolate Ovaltine (or Nestle quick powdered mix)
- Sugar or granulated sweetener of choice
- Non-fat dry milk (optional)
- Good quality vanilla extract
- Ice cubes (or frozen milk cubes for a creamier texture)
How to make chocolate ice cream in a Vitamix
Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container, in the order listed, and secure the lid. Select Variable 1. Turn machine on and quickly increase speed to Variable 10, then to High. Use the tamper to press ingredients into the blades. In about 30-60 seconds, the sound of the motor will change and four mounds should form. Stop machine. Do not over mix or melting will occur. Serve immediately.
*Can half this recipe for a smaller portion. This makes 5 cups.

- 1/2 cup granulated sugar or granulated sweetener of choice
- 1/2 cup non-fat dry milk powder optional, but adds extra creaminess
- 1 tsp good quality vanilla extract
- 4 cups ice cubes or frozen milk cubes
Instructions
- Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container, in order listed and secure lid. Select Variable 1.

Can I use 2% milk instead of whole milk?
Patty, that should work well, too.
I wonder if this could be made dairy free, with possibly cashew milk or oat milk in place of the whole milk and coconut milk powder as the dry milk powder. I may have to try it!😋

When I made it had a good flavor but it was mostly like chunks of ice find chunks but very chunky icy but the machine had stopped and wouldn’t go anymore suggestions?
Lori, what kind of blender are you using? This recipe is for a high powdered blender, specifically the Vitamix. If you are using a Vitamix, using the tamper to push the ice into the blades is key. You should end up with smooth and creamy ice cream.

Can you prepare in advance and freeze?
Yes, you can, but it will contain ice crystals from the water content in the frozen mixture. The texture is best freshly made.
Are there any substitutes for the Ovaltine and Nestlé?
Hi Alice. Those are the only two that I have tested so far.
I’ve made it with equal parts cocoa powder and sugar per a Vitamix recipe book and it turned out great too!
